The vision outside of this range is referred to as peripheral vision. The receptors, here, are less dense and images are less distinct than those found in foveal vision. Although foveal and peripheral vision are commonly used terms, Trevarthen (1968) used the terms focal and ambient vision. Focal vision is identical to foveal vision, but ambient vision differs a little from peripheral vision. According to Trevarthen, ambient vision includes visual information from both the fovea and periphery. The information coming from foveal vision, however, is not what the individual is focusing on but the other light rays which are being detected.
As we experience different situations we store, in LTM, the results of our actions and which information was useful to us. When we find ourselves in similar situations, at a later date, we recall that information and search the environment for the information, or cues, that we perceive as being relevant. Cues that are not deemed to be relevant are blocked by the selective filter. Visual search As we stated in the last section, we search the environment for cues that we believe are relevant to the task in hand.
The perception of the pattern allows the player to determine what kind of ball has been pitched before the entire signal has been seen. 3 What kind of shot is the player playing – down the line or cross-court? INFORMATION PROCESSING THEORY AND PERCEPTION 37 a forehand shot. Can you tell whether it is a cross-court or down the line shot from the position of his body? A slightly different aspect of pattern recognition is the phenomenon known as closure. A good example of closure occurs when we see an object moving towards us, but then lose sight of it for a brief period of time, due to some obstruction to our view.
