Although foveal and peripheral vision are commonly used terms, Trevarthen (1968) used the terms focal and ambient vision. Focal vision is identical to foveal vision, but ambient vision differs a little from peripheral vision. As we experience different situations we store, in LTM, the results of our actions and which information was useful to us. When we find ourselves in similar situations, at a later date, we recall that information and search the environment for the information, or cues, that we perceive as being relevant. Cues that are not deemed to be relevant are blocked by the selective filter.
