Changes to system tables should only be made by means of stored procedures (except under the most extreme circumstances), as this will guarantee the integrity of the system table data.

When offered the opportunity by Wordware to write a book about Sybase databases again, I had to decide what was most topical. What did I want to write about first? My inclinations were systems administration and performance and tuning, as they encompass what has changed the most since the last Sybase books had been published. I made the (somewhat arbitrary) decision that there are more people performing systems administrator duties daily than performance and tuning, so I chose to do the SA book (this book).
