Times have changed and nowadays many physicians accept the fact that a lot of clinical cases are more complex and more difficult than they can handle; they have started to recognize that they are (partly) unable to deal with these more complex cases in a reasonable way. Many physicians are now open to receiving help from outside their own medical profession, which is a great success for the patients. This professional help was provided by ethicists who knew how to determine and to analyse ethical cases.
Here, empirical research and ethics influence each other, for instance by putting certain topics on the agenda of ethical discussion and by applying certain results obtained in one discipline to another.
