It became a reality quickly after the federal government agreed to support the proposal. Canada gave the Foundation $25 million in 2003 to operate EXTRA for 10 years; the first cohort of 2 dozen executives began the programme the next year (Health Canada and CHSRF, 2003). To be eligible, EXTRA applicants must be mid-career health service executives in senior positions, such as chief executive officer or chief of nursing or medicine. There are four residency sessions over the 2 years, covering topics from enhancing the fellows’ own research literacy to showing them how to promote research use and develop the leadership skills they need to change their organisations.
As a result of knowledge brought by the new members, it was decided to refine the original task and revise the focus to identifying and mapping the current position in relation to training and development within dermatology outpatient services, identifying the needs and gaps in provision and to make recommendations which could inform national standards.
