Instructors could also write their own cases about local issues (see Shulman, 1992), or have students write cases about issues and dilemmas encountered in schools (Sudzina, 1993; Sudzina & Kilbane, 1992). In these instances, the instructor and the students create the curriculum. Teaching With Cases Unfortunately, cases do not teach themselves. Even the most engaging case will fail to elicit thoughtful student discussion if the instructor is unprepared. Although teaching notes are helpful, instructors usually teach a case a few times before they become familiar with it.
The cases in this text are the results of the teaching, experimenting, and writing of the authors. They contend that the cases are constantly in a state of evolution. What they submitted for publication is the present state of each case. As the authors use the cases in their teaching, however, they will undoubtedly continue to evolve. We urge you to read, study, and use the materials from this text. We also encourage you to write to the authors or e-mail them with your reactions to the cases, with descriptions of how you used them, and with examples of your own work with cases.
