Each of the large wards contained a double open fireplace with very ornamental flues and these were used to heat the water both for domestic purposes and to run the rudimentary central heating system. The walls were tiled up to six feet above the floor, and the windows extended from three feet above the floor to within one foot of the ceiling. Dirty linen and refuse was removed from the ward by 'chutes' directed into the basement, and a room was set aside for fumigating the bed linen. The basement floor contained separate dining rooms for the men and women, and day rooms which led into an outside open corridor where the patients could exercise.
One of the Pall Mall Gazette's reporters wrote in the 1930's, 'Not long after it was opened the Convalescent Hospital which is situated in one of the most charming parts of Wimbledon, fell into rather a low financial state, but I believe Mr. T.
