This has been replaced by a form of liberal tolerance of a wide diversity of beliefs, principles and practice. This does not, however, just mean that ethically anything goes. Alongside respect for ethical plurality, there needs to be the balance of a shared ethic that transcends the particular interest of nations and major corporations. Inevitably this is an ethics which is not easily or simplistically applied, requiring careful dialogue around the many different principles, cultural and religious perspectives, ideologies and social expectations that give meaning to any particular situation.
Our contention is that, although the extent to which each principle is realised in the various types of institution will vary, yet, ideally, there is room for at least a speck of each in all. The system as a whole must be judged deficient unless it provides adequately for all of them. (Emphasis added) In 1997, the UK Dearing Report (the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education) also discerned ‘four main purposes of higher education’.
