For another, we wanted this language to be applicable to widely diverse situations, a preoccupation which naturally led to favor abstraction. Early on, Albert and Lukas saw the need to equip this formal apparatus with a substantial content. In a series of papers, they strained to provide what they saw as the missing link between the mathematical aspects of the theory, and the underlying, mostly cognitive, content of the phenomena under study. Several chapters of this volume contain excellent illustrations of this particular strand of knowledge space research.
Introduction In cognitive psychology we are interested in the question, how knowledge is represented internally. What is going on in our minds when we gather and store information about ourselves and about the world around us? How do we retrieve this information, modify it, and use it in everyday life? In this context, the term knowledge structure is often used in a very unspeci- Page 4 fied way. Typically it means little more than the pure idea that knowledge has to be organized somehow. In this sense ''structure" is a mere synonym for some kind of organization.
The following section provides some mathematical definitions. Only very basic concepts of order theory are needed. The remaining part of this chapter is devoted to consequences and applications of these definitions within cognitive psychology, test theory, knowledge assessment, and the design of learning environments. The various contributions in this book are natural consequences and detailed illustrations of the ideas developed in the present chapter. They describe theoretical extensions and report empirical investigations.
