The attributes included in the Global Catalog are used in searches to locate objects in the directory. By default, there is only one GC in a forest. Subsequent GCs must be added manually. It is maintained on domain controllers that are designated as Global Catalog servers, which store a complete replica of the domain in which the DC is located, and a partial replica of every other domain in the forest that facilitates forest-wide searches.
