He did not touch her, for it was plain to see from her ecstatic expression that she was not aware of him or conscious of any danger. She pressed harder against the ice as though she would melt her way into it She was much beyond herself and anything whick Flann had ever known. He sank to his knees beside her, bowed his head, and began to pray. Above him, he heard her soft whisper and wept because he knew it was not for him. “Oh, my darling, my only one! ” Facing the ice wall, he saw that it was almost parchment thin.
She considered using the flint ax and the steel sword. Two little lines of concentration formed between her eyes. Her face cleared. She took the stranger’s right hand and slipped off his ring. His hand had been clenched and it had escaped the notice of the men. Now his hand was open and the ring came off easily. It was very hot in her palm and she rolled it around, remembering. He had told her that if danger was near him, it would be warm. So he was in great danger now? Well, she would see to it that he would be protected as he had never been before!
They had reassured each other. The body would live. They could go on in it together while that should be necessary and there would be no strife between them. Again it was as though the little bells rang. Thyra Us-tened while the other spoke to her mind. They were now so close that it did not seem as a new thing to her, but more as though she was remembering a dimly recalled, half-forgotten tale of long ago.
