Telemachus' journey has the effect of bringing him to a state of self-fulfillment in which he is identified by himself and others as a worthy successor to Odysseus. Part of this process involves literal identification, both in the sense that he is seen doing some of the same things his father does and in the sense that he is identified as Odysseus' son. When he visits the court of Menelaus and Helen he behaves in a way that anticipates his father's behavior among the Phaeacians. Because the rules of hospitality prohibit asking a guest's identity until his essential needs have INTRODUCTION been taken care of, both father and son are entertained by their hosts while remaining unknown.
