This use of rules is akin to a programmer’s use of high-level programming languages like C++ or Java rather than assembly language. At present, rule-based systems should not be removed as a technique for cognitive explanation when all that has been demonstrated so far is that some cognitive processes are not well characterized as being rule-based and that cognitive science often uses rules that are too coarse-grained.
