Early computers used 16-bit (2-byte) memory addressing, and therefore could only address up to 2^^ = 65,536 memory locations, or 64 KB. This is why early computers had a 64 K memory limit - one could put more memory in the box, but the processor couldn't address it. In an attempt to break through this barrier, some computers added what was called "extended memory". This was memory above the 64 K Desktop Computers: Hardware 3J_ addressable limit, so a variety of electronic contortions were necessary to get access to this memory, including swapping its contents with memory addresses below the 64 K limit.

Unfortunately, IEEE 1394 is not a very catchy name, and since Apple was one of the first to implement this standard on their desktop computers, they coined the name "Firewire" to refer to it. Sony referred to their implementation of the same standard in their digital cameras as "iLink", but that name has not caught on like Firewire. Technically, the name Firewire should only be used to refer to Apple's implementation, but it is used unofficially to refer to any implementation of this standard. Like USB, Firewire devices are hot-swappable, and like SCSI, the devices can be connected to each other in a daisy-chain configuration, although no terminator is needed.
