To what do we attribute their success? Do they have a special aptitude for learning languages? Superior intelligence? Exceptional motivation? Why do they succeed when so many others fail? It is interesting to note that the lack of success experienced by many Americans when attempting to learn a foreign language does not necessarily increase their empathy toward those individuals who are trying to make English their second language.

For most adults, developing L2 proficiency is a daunting task. Nevertheless, some adults do manage to become quite fluent in a second language. They might be American business executives or government officials who will be sent overseas to work in a foreign country. Others are international students who currently are studying at an American college or university. Some are immigrants to the United States who must learn English in order to work, obtain an education and to function in society. Such individuals are living proof that under the right set of circumstances, with enough motivation and hard work, adults can master new languages.
