Can you hear a foreign language and immediately be able to replicate the inflections? What are some of the things at which you are a “natural”? Brainstorm three to five of these skills. Your favorite classes and subjects. Looking back through your school years, what were the classes—or specific subjects—that you enjoyed the most, that inspired you to learn more?

If possible, start this process as early as possible in your college career—or better, while still in high school. Before you begin the process, organize some research on the major. What are some typical jobs and career paths of graduates? Spend some time examining in detail the lives of people in these jobs. Research what typical days at their jobs look like. All this research and all these experiences should give you enough information to help you decide if you have chosen the right field. By the way, if you find you really do not like any of the career paths for your major, then you’ll need to consider if you have time to change your major or make other changes to find your correct career path.
