They do it in innumerable spectra of significance, encompassing entire ranges of virtual qualitative evaluations inherent to our experience. In contrast to the vital principle, the principle of life-significance given by the poetic sense is not meant to promote life operations and growth but to make it pleasurable. Thus emerges an infmitude of moments of the pleasurableness of life: its aesthetic significance, its aesthetic enjoyment which lifts us from pedestrian life-concerns to an elevated plane.

4. THE POETIC SENSE OF THE ENJOYING FUNCTION: THE "VITAL SENSE" AND THE "AESTHETIC" SENSE Enjoyment of our acts varies along a widely differentiated ladder of intensities and degrees of self-absorption as well as extension within the circuits of our functioning. Thus, it varies in the nature of its life-significance. In fact, although a sharp demarcation line between the one and the other cannot be drawn because they are partly fused with each other, nevertheless in their respectively pronounced visibility they stand out as clearly different - as if we could switch one of them on or off - and we distinguish one as the vital sense of our act-enjoyment function and the other as the aesthetic sense.

We may either emphatically experience our self as vibrating in the richness of our life-potency - that is, in our vital sense, which endows all our individual enjoyments with a special vigorous sense of power - or we may overshadow it by emphasizing in our experience an imaginative "aesthetic" sense of our enjoyment within which the self finds something akin to a new dimension. In fact, the innumerable acts which we perform and which carry our vital progress onward (for example, acts of pulsations, instinctual acts, acts of 16 ANN A-TERESA TYMIENIECKA sensations, feelings, desires, volitions), which express our vital or as itis usually said "animal" phase of existential progress, as well as our specifically human circuit of experience, which begins with the entrance into play of cognitive, valuative, aesthetic, etc.
