Ritual is simultaneously a marker of structural features of school organization, and a component of that selfsame structure. Moreover the rituals (or their absence) are a powerful analytic lever on principles of authority, power, control and meaning. Bernstein does not appear in this context to be concerned with a detailed specification of social class per se.
