I used the key chain incident itself, and I condensed what the men at the bar said and attributed their whimsical requests to the key chain man. Then I further removed the scene from real life by filtering the dialogue through Angel's perceptions. As much as I liked some of those other passages in the journal, I had to be careful to use only what fit into my story, no more, no less. What would have happened to the story if I'd simply lifted the entire journal entry into my story without transforming it?

But now that I think about it, I can see it working into a story in a couple of ways. The way in which Id incorporate the anecdote would depend entirely on whose point of view the story is told from. The haughty critic would view the episode differently from the unfortunate amateur thespian who played Salieri. I keep a journal for a variety of reasons. Sometimes I want to chronicle, as in a diary. Sometimes I want to record a detail that otherwise would be lost forever. Sometimes I record a dream, and a couple of these dreams have actually been the kernels for some short stories I've written.
