I begin chapter 1 by exploring village life in the Guatemalan highlands where I lived. With that context in hand, I focus on the everyday practices surrounding pregnancy and childbirth in Santa Cruz. I analyze these practices to show how childbirth is an important local site Introduction 21 where kin ties are formed, which creates and reinstantiates mutually constituted, relational subjectivities.
