Depending upon the system used, information will appear at the top or bottom of the screen showing 'default values' of the various settings concerned with page design. There will probably be a 'ruler line' or 'fprmat line' relating to the horizontal scale on a typewriter, indicating margins and tab settings.

One maker in fact offers no fewer than three possibilities: 32lines X 128 characters; 32 X 256; and 70 X 102. In advertisements and sales literature you may see a VDU specified as '28 X 80 scrolling to 94 X 250'. The smaller figure is the number of lines, the larger the number of characters per line in each case. The machine thus described would have a display of 28 lines of 80 characters (half-page), but the actual document produced could be as large as 94lines long or 250 characters wide. The size of the displayed page is governed by the amount of main memory which has been set aside for that purpose.

Punched paper tape is still used in many applications, including sending Telex messages, and in photo-typesetting. Many word-processor manufacturers in the past have offered paper-tape punches as optional extras, so that the word processor can be used in conjunction with a telex machine or phototypesetter. In most cases this is no longer necessary, as the various types of equipment can communicate electronically. Most word processors now use magnetic media in a variety of forms. Before we go on to look at these, we must first get to know some of the terms used in describing them and measuring their capacity for storage.
