Bougainville was a French nobleman. He had fought with the French forces during the Seven Years’ War at the siege of Quebec, then participated in a brief French colonization of islands off the coast of present-day Argentina, known in English as the Falklands. In 1767 Bougainville was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when he received orders to sail westward around the world in search of possible colonial territories for France, which had lost its empire in North America and Asia to the British in the Seven Years’ War.

Dias departed from Lisbon in August 1487 and rounded the southern tip of Africa in February 1488. Dias landed at what is now called Mossel Bay and encountered peoples called the Khoikhoi and the San. He then followed the coast eastward, as far as the Great Fish River, where his crew became fearful of the unknown waters and persuaded him to turn back. Dias returned to Lisbon after more than 17 months to great acclaim. He informed the king that on his return voyage he had seen a great cape at the bottom of Africa, which the king named the Cape of Good Hope.

This protest would become a rallying cry in the rebellion of the American colonists in the years ahead. The Seven Years’ War had important consequences not only for the imperial balance of power but also for exploration. James Cook had joined the Royal Navy at the outset of the war. His service in the siege of Quebec and his subsequent work in surveying the coastlines of Canada and Newfoundland had brought his formidable skills to the attention of senior naval officers. His commission to lead an exploratory expedition into the Pacific would have been impossible had it not been for the war.
