It explores the socio-cultural pervasiveness of ageism in the contemporary discourses on older men and the challenging roles they face within families in later life, particularly caregiving within long-lived marriage relationships. Chapter 5 - Reinventing family caregiving: a challenge to theory and practice. Over the past 30 years caregiving has been conceptualized mainly as a stressful event. Consequently an increasing number of research intervention studies have been designed to relieve this burden, although the findings are confusing and conflicting and the effectiveness of interventions has been questioned.
These ties may persist in “hidden mode” and may be activated in times of need. Extended family networks may be perceived as structures which provide opportunities for interpersonal contact, and as a consequence it is important to distinguish between two different concepts (Lang, 2005: 65): • Kinship Availability, the size of the family network actually available to the individual, or the number of relatives structurally available (“the objective structure of kinship networks”).
