The first was the amount of food available. When a village reached its optimum size, the population divided and a new village was 'budded off from the first village (Maisels 1990: 130). Second, it has been hypothesized that there is an optimum size for any social unit organized on an egalitarian basis. If the size of the group extends beyond this limit, then it is no longer possible to maintain the cohesion and internal order of the group on the basis of face-to-face, egalitarian relationships.
By themselves, chiefs could raise a war party made up of hundreds of men, but with the help of allies they were sometimes in a position to extend the war party to many thousands of men (Redmond 1994: 46). In contrast to tribal raids, which aimed to settle scores, or bolster the prestige of the members of the war party within their own villages, the aim of chiefdoms which went to war was to extend the land and power of the chief. The political environment of chiefdoms was thus very different from that of tribal villages.
