Types of Failure There have been two different types of failure. The first type, which accounts for the best part of the total, takes the form of a longitudinal split. This type of failure has been readily explained as the result of faulty flash butt welds and will not be discussed further here. 3. 1. Visual appearance. Examination of longitudinal failures has shown that the split is always the result of the coalescence of a number of smaller longitudinal cracks.
