The calyx becomes split along these weak points by the growth of the fruit. In Gilia FRUIT AND SEED 33 the calyx enlarges in fruit before it eventually ruptures. In the Phloxes with carinate sinuses the moment of splitting is postponed by the unfolding of the sinus. The calyx of Phlox drummondii is resistant to the pressure of the growing fruit, causing the latter to dehisce and forcibly eject the seeds. The fruit is a capsule throughout the family. It is normally three-celled but in some species of N avarretia is twoor one-celled.
Giliastrum. It thus appears that only the members of the section Euloeselia of Brand can be maintained in the genus Loeselia. The taxonomic history of Linanthus differs in a curious way from that of Gilia. In the latter the demands of naturalness have been met by splitting off various unrelated or distantly related series. In Linanthus, by contrast, phylogenetic unity has been attained by bringing together several originally separate genera, such as Linanthus sensu stricto, Leptosiphon, F enzlia, and Dactylophyllum.
