Example text

Appreciating the beauty of the picture, I relate to an object, which exists independently of my psychological approach to it. Otherwise, accidents, experiences, could not be shared by a multiplicity of people, they would be merely private experiences. But we know that the Brentanian school in its various modes rejected psychologism, the view that objects of experience depend on psychological access only. So, there are some hints in support of the claim that the Brentanian line of ontology is compatible with externalism.

Twardowski and Husserl did not accept the reistic phase of Brentano. They developed the relation towards the small cat as an important relation. So, they would eventually come into opposition with the reistic Brentano. Brentano was a descriptivist. In the empiricist tradition, he set himself the task of describing phenomena. So he might not be interested at all in the answer to the question: how is an intentional relation possible? I presume that Brentano only set himself the task of describing intentional relations.

Thus Brentanian descriptive psychology would be justified by this fact as something objective and external, and as something interindividually accessible. This theory may now be seen as forming the basis of a new science. Ultimately, we should not forget that Brentano wrote about psychology from an empirical point of view. 38 3* Why Miklosic is Important for Brentano18 It was Miklo§ic's treatment of Subjektlose Sätze (subjectless sentences) which suggested to Brentano a change from the traditional Aristotelian analysis: Die Katze ist braun Subject Predicate Eine braune Katze ist Concrete Individual Psychological Affirmation to: For Brentano the concrete individual is important and there no longer exists the distinction between the subject (die Katze) and predicate (ist braun).
