That the comparison of Loosh's head to a cannonball should occur to Bayard at this moment perhaps says something about the intensity of the illusion of war that the boys with their backyard battle have createdalthough we should not make too much of this suggestion, since Faulkner in Soldiers' Pay (1926) and in Sanctuary (1931) describes male black heads in non-war contexts with the same image.
Bayard Sartoris is telling the story, but Bayard is twelve when "Ambuscade" takes place, so the words of "Ambuscade" are clearly not those of any twelve-year-old boy. What The Unvanquished must be, then, is a storytelling performance by an adult Bayard Sartoris (a story-teller with a vocabulary and style equal to Faulkner's) looking back in his mind on his experiences during and after the Civil War, filtered through the haze of memory which, without necessarily deliberately distorting, perhaps sometimes shades the way things actually were to the way they might have been, or should have been, or sometimes simply in whatever ways that will make a more interesting memory and story.
