We tend to ignore or downplay the sensory embodiment— remembered and longed-for aromas, flavors, and compositions— as well as the attendant emotion that make people hold on to “forbidden,” “quirky,” and “archaic” plants, no matter how unwise, unprofitable, or inconvenient. Performed and recreated in everyday practice, neither place nor agency is logically formulated or inscribed as a set of processes or principles. There is a need to reinsert embodiment into the conversation about conservation, and to materialize, in “concrete utopias” (Bloch 1988) that dot the landscape of forgetting, a vision of sensuous dwelling that cannot be subject to a universal standard or programmatic design.
In order to better appreciate the ensuing dialectic, we need to understand earlier efforts, which concentrated on collecting and cata loguing biological diversity, moving germplasm from their natural habitats in centers of domestication and diversity to cold storage in designated repositories, and paving the way not only for ex situ conservation in genebanks but also for the formal or commercial seed industry (Plucknett et al. 1987; Kloppenburg 1988; Fowler and Mooney 1990; Fowler 1994). This was the era of the great “gene hunters” who explored distant corners of the planet and brought back prized specimens, from the little known to the sought after— a time when national sovereignty over germplasm was unheard of, and probably inconceivable.
