First, the findings on different age groups should not be the result of selective mortality; that is, age groups should distinguish themselves not only on the variable of interest because they represent different compositions of the initial birth cohorts due to selective mortality. For example, an inappropriate interpretation of crosssectional age differences would occur if a high correlation between income and length of life corresponded to the age effect observed in a cross-sectional analysis.

For instance, it is also possible to analyze correlational associations across domains of functioning using cross-sectional data. The relationship between intelligence and health is one example. There is little evidence from previous research that such correlational "systemic" covariance patterns are much altered when they are calculated separately for younger and older persons using longitudinal data. Furthermore, it is feasible to utilize cross-sectional data as a first estimate of causal temporal connections, especially if these are hypothesized on the basis of theory.

If this did not lead to contact either, a new letter was sent with another date for an appointment about four or five weeks after the first.
