In 1496 d’Aubusson blocked up the gate and built a powerful bastion of a slightly irregular shape opposite the tower. The bastion seems to have been built as a detached structure, and its flank reached no farther than the lower outer wall. It was only later, in 1521/22, that Grand Master de l’Isle Adam joined the flanks of the bastion and the curtains of the main wall, incarnating in stone the drawings of the Italian engineer Basilio dalla Scuola di Vicenza. Restoring the parapet on the bastion after the siege of 1522, the Turks made a mistake, so that today it does not look the same as it did during the siege.
