The return to the tonic, which occurs only later, is a special moment. The third stanza returns to the speaker's realization of his un worthiness then shifts to a plea that he be spared the unpleasantness of eternal fire.
Coda A new figure appears over the familiar repeated eighths of the accompaniment, turning to the tonic minor. The final plea, 'Gere curam mei finis', is answered with a violent deceptive cadence, as the bass's trill on ft slides up to g and the expected E-minor chord is replaced by the fortissimo G-minor chords that open the 'Dies irae music'. This 'brusque transition' and the parallel fifths earlier in the 'Confutatis' were the principal iegers defauts' cited by Reyer in his generally laudatory review.

Verdi seems to have been guided primarily by the criterion of declamation: at least after the opening, passages built upon the principal motive or close derivations of it are set to 'Kyrie eleison', which fits the motive better.
