Fifth in his class at Penn, Fields had no trouble getting into Harvard Law and enrolled there immediately after graduating from college in 1959. Of course, he had absolutely no interest in becoming a lawyer or even in attending classes. He just wanted to be in Harvard’s rarefied environment, most particularly the social scene surrounding it in Cambridge. “Oh God, those people at Harvard were pathetic,” Fields says. “They studied when they were on the toilet, asking questions back and forth while they took a crap.
When they first met and came together to form a band, it was in part through coincidence, and in part as the result of a simpatico understanding based on mutual backgrounds and experiences. This isn’t to imply that Rev and Vega were identical, for they were anything but. They were more like opposite ends of the same spectrum, two reactions to a classic Jewish New York experience that played an integral part in making them so perfect as a duo. Vega grew up in Bensonhurst, the son of a working-class diamond setter.
